What is EQ?

E.Q., which stands for emotional quotient, is a measure of emotional intelligence, a vast and fascinating topic. For far too long, people have believed that a person’s intellectual intelligence, measured by I.Q., was the only factor in determining academic and professional success. However, through more than twenty-five years of private tutoring experience, our founder has discovered that a person’s emotional intelligence plays a complementary, and sometimes a more important role in a person’s achievement than their intellectual intelligence. Most of us have known brilliant people whose limited empathy and social awareness prevented them from building and participating in fruitful relationships, as one example. What’s more, unlike intellectual intelligence, emotional intelligence can be cultivated and improved upon, thereby opening doors and timelines that were previously inaccessible.

If you are interested in knowing more about emotional intelligence, then we recommend two primary resources. The first is the seminal book “Emotional Intelligence,” by Daniel Goleman. The second is a series of books and workbooks that were produced by the Emotional Intelligence & Diversity Institute, and you can find out more about them here. We found these discussions not only thought-provoking but also instructive. By developing our own emotional intelligence, especially though the use of the EIDI workbooks, our founder and tutors have become more self-aware, thus increasing their sensitivity to students’ needs and leading to new and effective ways to support them.
